Of his astronomical writings during this period the most important are his investigation of the mass of Jupiter, his report to the British Association on the progress of astronomy during the 19th century, and his work On an Inequality of Long Period in the Motions of the Earth and Venus.
In June 1835 Airy was appointed Astronomer Royal in succession to John Pond, and began his long career at the national observatory which constitutes his chief title to fame.
It consisted essentially in the adoption of Delaunay's final numerical expressions for longitude, latitude, and parallax, with a symbolic term attached to each number, the value of which was to be determined by substitution in the equations of motion.

William Huggins exemplified the motto: "The anxious inquirer after knowledge conquers all difficulties at last." Perhaps this was meant as tacit encouragement for the success of his, as yet, unsubstantiated method of photographing the solar corona, the one area of Huggins' research which received no mention at all in Dunkin's address.
The reputations of astronomers, he asserted, were at stake and dependent on the skill, or lack thereof, of these artisans.
Because William Huggins is remembered principally as a pioneer in the field of stellar and nebular spectroscopy, his efforts to introduce spectroscopic methods into solar research are less well known.

Born in 1868 near Ashby de la Zouche, Dyson was educated at Brandford and at the University of Cambridge, from whence, after a period of research, he was appointed as Chief Assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, by W. Christie in 1894.
Proving to be a most diligent astronomer, in 1906 Dyson was appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland, returning to Greenwich in 1910 on Christie's retirement as Astronomer Royal.
There is much overlap between the records of Dyson's tenure as Astronomer Royal and those of his predecessor William Christie and even his predecessor George Airy [classmarks RGO 7 and RGO 6 respectively], and those of his cuccessor at Greenwich and Herstmonceux, Harold Spencer Jones [classmark RGO 8].

Historically the Observatory's founding warrants, and all those succeeding, directed that the work of the Observatory should be to perfect astronomical navigation and up until the end of Airy's tenure it was essentially observational work towards this end which was carried out at Greenwich.
However during Christie's period in office much more powerful instruments were installed at Greenwich, reflecting the Astronomer Royal's interest in physical astronomy.
Before Woolley's retirement in 1971 it was announced that the title of Astronomer Royal would not in future necessarily be awarded to the current Director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, and no Astronomer Royal after 1971 in fact also was been the current Director.

The Virginia Commissioners suggested that two lines be run, the correct one to be determined later.
