William Claflin (March 6, 1818 - January 5, 1905) was an industrialist and philanthropist who served as Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1869-1872 and as a member of Congress from 1877-1881.
He was a founder of the Free Soil Party, served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1849-1853, and was elected to the Senate in 1859.
After serving as Lieutenant Governor for Alexander Hamilton Bullock, Claflin was elected to the Governor's office in 1868.

Boston philanthropist Lee Claflin and his son, Massachusetts Governor William Claflin, provided the initial financing for the purchase of the Orangeburg Female Academy, on whose grounds the new University was established.
In 1871 Dr. Webster oversaw the merger of Claflin University and the Baker Biblical Institute, which was moved to Orangeburg.
As a result of legislation in the South Carolina General Assembly, Claflin was affiliated with the South Carolina State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute (later to become South Carolina State University) from 1875 to 1896.

The boxes, assembled yesterday by volunteers, included turkeys donated by the Sippican Corporation, produce from local merchants, apples and oranges from a Rochester business owner, and breads made by club members.
Claflin said, the deliveries were just about completed.
