 Gunsmoke
Gunsmoke was set in the cow town of Dodge City, Kansas, described by writer Lucius Beebe as a "suburb of hell." Meston believed the marshal of the "Gomorrah of the West" would be almost as scarred as the homicidal psychopaths who populated such a place.
Supporting Bill Conrad in that first episode were three actors who would soon become fixtures on the series: Parley Baer as "townsman", Howard McNear as the doctor and Georgia Ellis as a widow.
Frustrated at the lack of character names, Conrad suggested that Baer's character be called "Chester or something" and decided to call the town's vulturous medico "Doc Adams" in honor of Charles Addams' ghoulish cartoons.
