Dawson County, Georgia, and the county seat, Dawsonville, were named for William Crosby Dawson.
The county was created by a legislative Act on December 3, 1857, primarily out of Lumpkin County and small parts of Gilmer, Pickens and Forsyth counties.
Dawson, the county seat of Terrell County, Georgia was incorporated on December 22, 1857 and named for William Crosby Dawson.

The town was incorporated in 1857 and built on a square with the courthouse in the center.
Dawson also developed culturally, having an early library, debating society, a local band, a public entertainment hall, and two newspapers.
The present courthouse is the second one to be built in the county; it was constructed in 1892 and renovated in 1936.

Dawson's Branch of the Big Stranger Creek flows through the southern portion of his farm.
Marvin was born in Broome County, N. Y., May 20, 1820, and lived in his native State until his twenty-second year when he removed to Warrick County, Ind., where he resided two years, and from there removed to Iowa, where he resided ten years and then came to Kansas.

The territorial forester at the time, William Crosby, was concerned that a one-year surrender of private land failed to allow for long-term management and planning for the forest reserve.
Based on Crosby's recommendations, the Board of Commissioners of Agriculture and Forestry, at its March 20, 1941 meeting, recommended changing the minimum term for surrender agreements from one year to 20 years.
Crosby wrote in a 1946 report that 207,857 acres of private land not under surrender agreement received tax exemptions.

Three letters from Wesley were written in 1862 from Fredricksburg, Virginia, Nashville, Tennessee, and Corinth, Mississippi describing: camp conditions in those areas: rumors that President Jefferson Davis intended to command in person at Nashville; preparations of the southern forces prior to the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee.
