}}Joseph Aloysius Lyons (15 September, 1879 – 7 April, 1939), Australian politician, tenth Prime Minister of Australia, was born in Stanley, Tasmania, the son of Irish immigrants.
Most politicians expected that he would soon be replaced by Menzies, who resigned from Cabinet in protest at the government's inaction.
He is the only person in Australian history to have been Prime Minister, Premier of a State, and Leader of the Opposition in both the Federal Parliament and a State Parliament (although George Reid had served as as Premier of a colony before Federation).

William Skirving who was secretary to the convention was a Scotchman, a man of good character, educated originally for the church.
Crowther (q.v.) government which followed could do little in the conditions of the period, and when it resigned in October 1879 Giblin realized that the only way to get useful work done would be to form a coalition ministry.
John's Australian Biographical Dictionary states that he was born on 20 July 1835, the Australian Encyclopaedia says 1836, the obituary notice in the Geographical Journal, "about the year 1847", and the Coolgardie Miner, at the time of his death, implied that the date was about 1820.

This wonderful collection was formed during the lifetime of Sir William Crowther, and was presented by him to the State Library of Tasmania over a period from 1964 until his death in 1981.
William Edward Lodewyk Hamilton Crowther (1887-1981) was knighted in 1964 for his services to the community, in particular the presentation of his collection to the State Library.
Members of the Crowther family have contributed substantially to the Tasmanian community since Sir William's great-grandfather, Dr William Crowther (1788-1839), arrived in Hobart in 1825.

William Deakin was born in Northamptonshire in 1819, and came to Australia immediately after his marriage in 1849.
He was educated at the Australian College under Dr Lang (q.v.), obtained a position as a young man in a Sydney wine merchant's business, and afterwards was in partnership as a merchant with a brother.

In 1839 he went with Williams to Poverty Bay, still continuing his studies, and there obtained an excellent knowledge of the Maori language, and of the mentality of the Maoris; an invaluable experience that he found of great use a year or two later.
He was naval commandant for some years, strongly advocated the formation of an Australian fleet, and in 1899 with the secretary of the Victorian defence department drew up a report on the future of Australian sea defence.
In 1902 he revived his proposals for an Australian navy but his report was overshadowed by the agreement reached at the colonial conference in that year.

Williams is chiefly remembered for his pioneering military medical tactics devised during the Boer War.
Crowther served with various units during the Great War, notably with the 21st Battalion from May 1915 to August 1916 and January 1917 to March 1918.
As Finance member of the Australian Military Board (April 1910 to August 1915), Laing was one of a select few from the Defence Department called to brief the Prime Minister Sir Joseph Cook on 2nd August 1914 upon notification by the Imperial Government of a warning in hostilities.
