It was named in honor of William Gaston, a member of Congress and a Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina.

A son of William Elmore and Susannah Butler appears as an unnamed male in the 1810 census and 1820 census.
William was elected by the members of the Brunswick Blues 1 November 1862 to serve as second lieutenant and was promoted to first lieutenant 20 October 1863 succeeding John Waverly Maddux who was chosen captain to succeed Capt. John Joseph Jones, who was promoted to colonel and commander of the 59th Infantry Regiment.
William was at Nottoway Bridge in Sussex County in 1864 when the 59th Regiment was guarding this very important point on the Petersburg and Weldon Railroad.
