January 13, 1938 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian actor, best known for his role as Cancer Man (aka the Cigarette Smoking Man) on The X-Files.
Davis, a former drama professor at Bishop's University, is founder of the William Davis Centre for Actors Study acting school in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Despite being known for his smoking character, Davis actually quit smoking in the 1970s; he smoked herbal cigarettes as Cigarette Smoking Man.

He was born into a Quaker family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Edward M. Davis and Maria Mott Davis (a daughter of the women's advocate Lucretia Mott).
He was a founder of the Association of American Geographers in 1904, and heavily involved with the National Geographic Society in its early years, writing a number of articles for the magazine.
