The memorial to William Dunstan, Ballarat's Victoria Cross winner, was erected in 1995 in the median strip in Sturt Street between Dawson and Drummond Streets as part of the federally funded 'Australia Remembers' project which marked the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
IN HONOUR OF WILLIAM DUNSTAN, VC, 1895 -1957.
William Dunstan was born in Ballarat and educated at Golden Point State School.

Dunstan married Lucretia Webb in 1833, Ralph Banks bible, as quoted on p 180, The Genealogical Record of the Banks Family...,3rd ed., Sarah B. Franklin, 1972.
Dunstan is listed in Winston Co., MS deed index as being party to a deed there in 1859.

 Dunstan VC
Cpl Dunstan was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for "most conspicuous bravery at Lone Pine Trenches, on the 9th August, 1915".
Cpl Dunstan along with Lieutenant Tubb and Cpl Burton held a newly captured trench during an early morning enemy counter attack.
Cpl Dunstan was also wounded in the head and temporarily blinded in the attack and was sent back to Australia on on 1 February 1916.

He wrote poetry, both Latin and English, a considerable amount of which has been preserved and is of good quality, though not particularly striking, and he was especially devoted to the works of Pico della Mirandola, of whose life he published an English translation some years later.
The final fate of the relic is somewhat uncertain, but in 1824 a leaden box was found in the Roper vault at St. Dunstan's, Canterbury, which on being opened was found to contain a head presumed to be More's.
A collected edition of More's English works was published by William Rastell, his nephew, at London in 1557; it has never been reprinted and is now rare and costly.

Men like Shout were often the most ready to concede that the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of other soldiers went unrecorded and remained unknown except to their comrades in arms.
He disliked the civic receptions he was forced to attend given in his honour and finally spoke his mind when he heard that a memorial fund was to be opened to collect money for him.
One wonders if Dunstan recalled the letter he had written all those years ago to the local press declining his memorial fund and drawing attention, just as the Queen was now doing, to all those whose courage and sacrifice had earned them nothing more than ‘wooden crosses’.
