  William Thornton
William Thornton (May 20, 1759-1828) was the original architect of the United States Capitol.
Thornton's design for the Capitol had been submitted after the close of a competition in which 17 entries were found wanting.
Thornton was also the first Superintendent of the United States Patent Office[?] from June 1, 1802 until his death on March 28, 1828.

Thornton's designs, submitted in 1793, were approved by President Washington, and their execution was entrusted to the supervision of E. Hallet and James Hoban.
In 1794, however, Thornton himself, being appointed a commissioner of the District of Columbia, became supervisor and remained in charge until 1802.
Thornton was the first to hold the post of clerk in charge of the Patent Office, and he served as commissioner of patents from 1802 until his death.

In 1995, Dr. Thornton became a clinical professor of medicine in cardiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
In 2003, Thornton left UTMB to complete interrupted work and publication in space medicine and to pursue development of a new clinical system with UNC.
Thornton has numerous publications, more than 50 patents and many awards, but he considers his family his greatest achievement.

William E. Thornton, aerospace medicine physician and National Aeronautics and Space Admin- istration (NASA) scientist, and the NASA Johnson Space Center have donated a sizable collection of original data and research records to the University Libraries.
The Thornton collection‹original graphics, magnetic tape, written data, reduced and analyzed data, reports, some hardware, photos, illustrations and other aerospace medicine research records dating from NASA missions in the mid-sixties through 1987‹will be held in the Fordham Health Sciences Library's Special Collections and Archives.
Thornton developed and designed the first mass measuring devices for space, which remain in use today.

Thornton received his doctorate in medicine from the University of North Carolina (UNC) in 1963 after obtaining a bachelor of science degree in physics from UNC in 1952.
Prior to the Shuttle program, Thornton was the principal investigator for a Skylab medical experiment and documented a number of basic responses of the human body to weightlessness, including alterations in body posture and shape, and rapid loss of muscle strength and mass along with preventive methods.
Thornton has recently designed and tested smaller, improved units to allow routine mass measurement in space.

In the new Lucile Matthews Wallace Memorial Thornton Self-Teaching Laboratory, students listen with their own stethoscopes to digital recordings of actual patients’ heartbeats and murmurs and can simultaneously feel the associated pulses and see it all displayed and explained on a video screen.
The Wallaces said the lab is a fitting tribute to both Thornton and their daughter, who died in 1997 from complications of heart surgery she received at a hospital not affiliated with UTMB.
Thornton, in turn, thanked the Wallaces for their support of the laboratory.

She was married in Rumford, Maine on September 20, 1941 to the late William E. Thornton, Sr., who died in Rumford on May 25, 1976.
