Born in Holyoke Massachusetts on July 20, 1864, William Fairfield Whiting was the son of William Whiting, prominent Massachusetts political leader.
Whiting was active in Republican Party politics, serving as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1924 and 1928.
President Calvin Coolidge appointed Whiting to succeed Herbert Hoover as secretary of commerce in 1928.

William apparently emigrated to Sudbury between 12 Jul 1638 and 22 Jan 1640.
He was remembered by the next generation as "an old man of venerable appearance, universally respected both for his wisdom and his virtues." In his later years he always occupied a special seat right beside the pulpit so that he might hear the minister's exhortations despite his deafness.

The Windham bicentennial book states "the family of [Reverend] Samuel Whiting was one of the religious militant families of the early town.
He married Elizabeth Judson on Sep 14, 1743 and for most of their lives, they lived in Stratford, near Fairfield CT where all of their 11 children were born.
It was commanded by Captain Whiting and was known as the "Tenth Company of Colonel David Wooster's Third Regiment of Connecticut Levy." Shortly after this excursion, Nathan was elected as a Colonel of the Second Regiment and saw action outside New Milford in 1759 and 1761.
