William Feller (1906 - 1970) American mathematician who specialized in probability theory, best known for the Feller process, and his classic textbook “An Introduction to Probability Theory and Its Applications”, Volume 1.
Feller was born in Zagreb (now the capital of Croatia) and christened after Saint Willibrord.

Feller played for the Cleveland Indians, his only team, for 18 years, being one of "The Big Four" Indians pitching rotation in the 1950s, along with Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Mike Garcia.
In Feller's later years, he has been very vocal about his resentment of the idea of Pete Rose, who was banned in 1989 for betting on baseball games while serving as manager for the Cincinnati Reds, being reinstated into Major League Baseball (and subsequently, be admitted into the Hall of Fame).
Feller also allegedly accused Nolan Ryan of not being worthy of the Hall of Fame and came under fire by many Brooklyn baseball fans for questionable comments made about Jackie Robinson, who entered the Hall of Fame the same year as Feller.

Feller and Salomon Bochner each had corner offices on the first floor of the old Fine Hall (now Jones, the Psychology Department.) As there was a central auditorium-style classroom on the floor, offices and smaller classrooms were to the outside of a rectangular hallway around the floor.

Feller went to Copenhagen where he remained until 1934, then he moved to the University of Stockholm where he joined the probability group headed by Harald Cramér.
Being a research associate of Cramér was valuable to Feller, as was the fact that he was able to have useful discussions with Marcel Riesz who was also working in Sweden.
Feller became an American citizen in 1944, and in the following year accepted a professorship at Cornell University where he became a colleague and friend of Mark Kac who had emigrated to the United States in similar circumstances to Feller.

William Feller's parents were Ida Perc and Eugene V Feller - well that is not strictly true since the family surname was not Feller but, as Gian-Carlo Rota put it, a Slavic tongue twister which William changed when he was about twenty years old, so his father never used the name Feller.

In November 1898, the empty Union Brewery was purchased by a three-man group, William Feller & Co., which consisted of Feller, August V. Kuehn (both formerly in-volved with the Riverside Brewing Company of Zanesville), and Jacob Epple, all three German immigrants.
By 1903, Feller had sold his interest to the other two men and moved north to Bellaire, Ohio, where he became a driving force behind the creation of the new Bellaire Brewing Company.
Reincorporated as the Marietta Brewing Company in that year, with a capital stock of $60,000, the plant was then led by Kuehn as president, with Epple as vice-president, and Kuehn's son George as secretary and treasurer.
