The 5'2" Williams turned 58 on Saturday, September 19 and despite a film career that hasn't been overly spectacular, buffs shouldn't discount his acting and musical contributions to the big screen.
As Swan, Williams is delightfully nasty, gleefully thwarting the pathetic Phantom at every turn and eventually seducing the object of his affection, a young Jessica Harper.
Williams also did the songs and music for Phantom, and, while it is pretty solid stuff, it's woefully dated.

Williams’ music has been covered by everyone from the Carpenters to Kermit the Frog, he’s got a host of Oscar nominations (and one win) under his belt, and two of his songs recently made the American Film Institute’s List of the 100 greatest movie songs of all time.
Williams cherished the experience of making the movie, but points out he was a much younger man then, and likely wouldn’t be able to wear the hats of both an actor and a songwriter these days.
They’ve reunited the film’s principal stars (Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper and Gerrit Graham), assembled house band The Juicy Fruits for an encore performance and even got their hands on a documentary tracking the film’s strange success in Winnipeg and Paris, France.

Finley remained as a fixture in De Palma's films through the seventies, finally getting his starring role in 1975 as The Phantom of the Paradise.

In the 1974 film PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, William Finley stars as Winslow Leach, a very talented composer who is working on a rock opera based on FAUST.
In real life, Williams has composed and produced many successful pop songs for groups like The Carpenters and Three Dog Night, and this inside knowledge of the music industry only adds to the realism of his performance.
As Winslow Leach, William Finley creates a very convincing naive and nerdy musician (as well as a naive and nerdy Phantom!), and pretty Jessica Harper does a fine job in her debut role as an up-and-coming singer and dancer (the object of Winslow's love).

While De Palma´s Hitchcock homages have sometimes led him into dead ends, this rock & roll remake seems to have liberated De Palma´s imagination, and the result is weird and funny, with the scruffy underground spirit of the director´s early pictures.
The Phantom is one Winslow Leach (William Finley), a nerdy songwriter whose "pop cantata" on the subject of Faust is stolen by a freakish, Phil Spector-like rock impresario called Swan (Paul Williams).

The biggest reason is the supporting cast: Kevin Conway is believably sleazy (and terrifying) as the villainous Barker, mime-turned-actor Wayne Doba pulls off the impressive feat of humanizing the film's mutated killer without the benefit of any dialogue and cult favorites Sylvia Miles and William Finley add color in bit parts as carnival workers.
Director Tobe Hooper delivers an exciting finale and works in the occasional inspired stylistic flourish along the way: the best of these is the tongue-in-cheek opening sequence, which manages lampoon key moments from Psycho and Halloween at the same time.
The actors and actresses did a very good job for their roles and are very convincing that you actually start having sympathy for them.

De Palma's weaknesses are in dealing with actors and meshing various acting styles and approaches.
The way the story connects people and leapfrogs toward the inevitable showdown between Peter, Gillian, Robin, and Childress is creative and requires the viewer to have a very liberal sense of disbelief.
The John Williams score is very evocative of Bernard Herrman and once again some might believe De Palma is paying homage to or even mimicking Hitchcock rather than doing something very different.

At one point, both filmmakers directed movies that nearly reproduced the passion of their first films: Hooper's Poltergeist and Welles' Touch of Evil.
Welles was reduced to making low-budget adaptations of Shakespeare plays like Othello and Macbeth, finding more success as an actor than as a filmmaker (the man who started his career with Citizen Kane ended his career as a voice-over on Transformers: The Movie before his death in 1985).
Every horror fan must feel sorry for Hooper these days--his career suffered particularly damaging blows in the 1990s: Spontaneous Combustion, Night Terrors, The Mangler and Crocodile look like the films of someone who has never SEEN the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, let alone made it.
