A New Brain - Death is a Cabaret
Finn's "New Brain," in addition to being the most directly autobiographical, is by far the jauntiest and least probing of the lot.
Inspired by a recent period in Finn's life in which he was wrongly believed to have an inoperable brain tumor, the show's dominant tone is of a cosmic gratitude.
Finn's musical is far more good-hearted and likable, but it feels at best distant and at worst like a singing, inspirational Hallmark card; it doesn't grab you while you're watching it or stay with you afterward.

William Finn responds: More instinctive, which of course is not the answer you wanted, but that is just the way it is. I used to begin by reading the poems of Frank O'Hara, which I always felt would "shove" my lyrics into the right place.
William Finn responds: That a song I wouldn't normally have thought was finished worked perfectly in this show--it was such a collaborative score (which I don't usually write).

William Finn premiered Elegies —; a song cycle, with a star-studded Broadway cast that included Christian Borle, Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello, Keith Byron Kirk and Michael Rupert.
It must be said, however, that any serious discussion of Finn’s music must point out that he repeats himself frequently, both melodically and harmonically, as well as employing favorite chord progressions (especially at the beginnings and endings of songs) over and over.
Undoubtedly, Finn remains one of the most unique and gifted composers we have and Elegies should be recorded with this extraordinary cast immediately.

William Finn's career in the musical theater is pretty remarkable considering that he doesn't write traditional show tunes--much less traditional shows.
But Finn has a gift for catchy melodies and his emotionally engaging work has a way of intimately connecting with audiences (during the initial run of Elegies, hardened New Yorkers could be seen trying to hide their tears).
