William Buel Franklin (February 27, 1823 – March 8, 1903) was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union Army general in the American Civil War.
As political intrigue swept the Union Army after Fredericksburg and the infamous Mud March, Franklin was alleged to be a principal instigator of the "cabal" against Burnside's leadership.
Franklin was reassigned to corps command in the Department of the Gulf and participated in the ill-fated 1864 Red River Campaign.

London, England, 1760; d., Paris, France, May 25, 1823) was the illegitimate, only son of William Franklin (last colonial governor of New Jersey, mother unknown) and grandson of and secretary to Benjamin Franklin.
Temple, as he was familiarly known, accompanied his grandfather to France in late 1776 and worked as secretary to the American diplomatic mission during the American Revolution.
After the elder Franklin died, Temple lived for a while with his father in England, and had an illegitimate daughter, Ellen.

Of interest is that Franklin called the worker honeybee by the wrong, male, gender: 'his cell' and 'he devours,' the text of the song using 'its' and 'it.' Aristotle's surmise of a king-bee as the governor of the community of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) was not refuted until the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
Franklin must have been aware of these observations at the time he copied the poem.
