The only South African award went to Private William Frederick Faulds on 18 July.
Two men of the 10th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers (76th Brigade, 3rd Division) won VCs on 20 July; Corporal Joseph John Davies and Private Albert Hill.

They traveled to England with the ex-slave Frederick Douglass in an attempt to arouse more abolitionist sentiment in that country, and on their return they went to 2 Kansas to take part in the violent prewar controversy inflaming that state.
The Louisville publisher D. Faulds said that two of his clerks, Charles Ward and William Shakespear Hays, wrote the words in 1857 or 1858, fitting them to a tune widely known among Southern fls, and it was this version that first reached New Orleans and then the entire South.

In a seperate display, the three South African VC winners are listed, including William Frederick Faulds (who won his VC during the Delville Wood actions).
Private Faulds, of the 1st Battalion South African Infantry, won the VC for rescuing wounded men under enemy fire on both the 18th and the 20th of July 1916.
The memorial and museum stand within the re-grown wood, and it is possible to walk along the same "rides" or tracks that used to exist before and during the war.
