William Frederick Meggers (July 13, 1888 – 1968) was an American physicist specialising in spectroscopy.
Born in Wisconsin, he had to combine his early schooling with working on the family farm, but earned a scholarship to Ripon College, receiving a bachelor's degree in Physics in 1910 and working as a research assistant.
Meggers crater on the Moon is named in his honor.

At the age of six, William Meggers was sent to a Lutheran parochial school, but in an action foretelling his independence of thought, rebelled after two weeks of strict religious education and was transferred to the Public School system.
Meggers' early efforts to extend spectrographic records toward infrared finally led to a new octane in photographic observations that all enjoy today.
We feel that William F. On July 5, 1927, I reported for duty at the Bureau and had the good fortune to be assigned to the Spectroscopy Section located on the second floor of the South Building.
There I received a cordial welcome from the Section Chief, Dr. William F. Meggers, who was to become a lifelong friend and mentor.
This was an encouraging event for a budding scientist and was characteristic of the generosity of Dr. Meggers.

William Frederick Ferdinand Meggers (WFM), often referred to as the "dean of American spectroscopists," is most well-known for his extensive research in physical optics, spectrochemical analysis, and spectroscopic wavelength standards, and for his contributions to the related fields of atomic and nuclear physics, astrophysics, and technical/scientific photography.
Meggers grew up in Clintonville, Wisconsin, the town in which he was born on July 13, 1888 to John Meggers and Bertha Bork Meggers, who emigrated to Wisconsin from Pomerania in 1872.
Meggers served as vice-president (1947-49) and president (1949-51) of the Optical Society of America and was a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).
