William George Aston (1841-1911) was one of the great pioneering European Japanologists of the nineteenth century.
Aston's fluent understanding of Japanese led him to compile two innovative grammars, both of which went to several editions.
Aston held a series of official diplomatic and secretarial posts in Japan and Korea during a politically turbulent period and was influential in the formation of British treaties with both countries.

William George Aston (1841-1911), arrived in Japan in 1864 as interpreter at the British legation in Edo.
Aston's advice influenced the government's position in the years that led up to the Meiji Restoration, and he was instrumental in preparing the first British treaty with Korea in 1883, which resulted in his appointment as consul-general at Seoul from 1884 to 1885.
Aston, together with Ernest Satow and Basil Hall Chamberlain, laid the foundation of British Japanology.

 D13 W. G. Aston, Japan, and English-Language Verse
Aston’s History of Japanese Literature (London: Heinemann, 1899), the first and for seventy years the only history of Japanese literature in English, would have been known to all poets under study here.
According to O’Shea (BL228), Aston’s Shintô: The Way of the Gods (London: Longmans, Green, 1905) was in Yeats’s library in the twenties, though Yeats’s passing interest in Shintô (see BL15c) is more directly traceable to Percival Lowell (see 6).
The Collected Works of William George Aston have been reissued in six volumes by Oxford UP in Tokyo (1997), and Aston’s publications in Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan are reprinted in Early Japanology (see 5b), vol.

Watson, "W.G.Aston" (1)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Scholar of Japanese literature, student of Shinto and pioneer of Japanese linguistics, William George Aston (1841-1911) is one of the towering figures of early Japanology in the West.
Aston's jottings are not perhaps of great importance in themselves, but they do give a fascinating insight into the working methods of a early student of Japanese literature.
Comparison of Aston's annotations with the original text and modern commentaries have revealed surprisingly few real mistakes, but there are many points of interest in terms of emphasis and interpretation.

 Haiku
Although there were attempts outside Japan to imitate the old hokku in the early 1900s, there was little genuine understanding of its principles.
Early Western scholars such as Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850–1935) and William George Aston were mostly dismissive of hokku's poetic value.
The first advocate of English-language hokku was the Japanese poet Yone Noguchi.

Anders als Aston, Chamberlain und Florenz, denen es in ihren klassischen Standardarbeiten vordergruendig um eine kommentierte Uebersetzung ging, versucht Naumann eine inhaltliche Analyse der japanischen Mythen.
