Goetz served as vice president of the new 20th Century Fox, but in 1942 he took charge of the studio temporarily when Zanuck, a World War I veteran, joined the United States military effort in the Second World War.
Goetz and his wife also were major investors in art, acquiring a significant collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works.
William Goetz died of cancer in 1969 at his home in Los Angeles and was buried in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Goetz, married to Louis B. Mayer's daughter Edith, also shared much in common with Mayer's other son-in-law David O. Selznick; both were producer-executives who rose though the studio ranks with dreams of running their own company.
Goetz, vice president of Twentieth Century-Fox, became temporary head of the studio when Darryl Zanuck joined the war effort in an extended service overseas in 1942.
The new responsibilities for Goetz were effective only during the hiatus, but Zanuck received reports from the studio that Goetz's behavior appeared overly ambitious.

He managed to find work producing movie plots, selling his first story in 1922 to William Russell and his second to Irving Thalberg.
He then worked for Mack Sennett and took that experience to Warner Brothers where he wrote stories for Rin Tin Tin and under a number of pseudonyms wrote over forty scripts from 1924 - 29.
In 1933 he left Warners to found Twentieth Century Films with Joseph Schenck and William Goetz, releasing their material through United Artists.
