 William Goldman by FilmMakers.com
William Goldman was born on August 12th, 1931 in Highland Park, Illinois, USA.
Goldman found an interesting novel by author Ross Macdonald and told the producer that he would write a script on speculation (not getting paid until the work was completed), as he did for most of his work at that time.
Goldman's next few screenplays, The Hot Rock (1972), The Great Waldo Pepper (1975), and The Stepford Wives (1975) were relatively successful, but it was in 1976 when he adapted the screenplay for All the President's Men that he once again received acclaim for writing one of the years best.

William Goldman's tale of True Love, Harsh Revenge and Rodents of Unusual Size exhibits a gleeful audacity seldom seen in literature before or since.
This, Goldman proudly states, is the abridged version he remembers, the "good parts version," and happily interrupts the narrative time and again to make some point or other about this particular sequence of events.
Goldman himself wrote the screen adaption for the wonderfully quirky movieof the same name, and it's simply amazing how similar the two are to each other -- a rarity, as anyone who's ever seen a favorite novel butchered by Hollywood.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Silent Gondoliers
Goldman adopts the same persona as the "author" of The Silent Gondoliers, a story of Luigi and his variety of compatriots as he explains why the gondoliers of Venice no longer sing when they ply their trade.
Goldman discusses many of the "people" he contacted in his attempts to research and verify the events he is relating and it quickly becomes apparent that even after 70 years, the individuals are more interested in preserving the legends surrounding Goldman's story than they are in providing him with "factual" evidence.
Just as Goldman's events are legendary, so are the various characters, ranging from Luigi, the greatest man to ever ply a gondola, to Cristaldi the Pickle, a deaf centenarian who could teach the most tone deaf man to sing, to the (naturally) beautiful Laura Lorenzini.

Here we are reminded of the friendship between Butch and Sundance, or the dependence the three heroes of the Princess Bride have for one another.
