William Hall (February 11, 1775–October 7, 1856) was the Governor of the state of Tennessee from April to October of 1829.
Hall was a native of North Carolina but came to Tennessee while still a young man and became a prosperous farmer as well as a political leader.
He was the first governor of Tennessee ever to serve out the unexpired portion of a term to which another person had been elected, and served for a shorter period of time as governor of Tennessee than anyone else to serve in that position.

William Bradford was born in 1590 in the Yorkshire farming community of Austerfield, England.
William Bradford was now shouldering many administrative responsibilities : record-keeping, correspondence with financial backers and negotiation for a patent to give legal permission for a settlement, and a swarm of details connected with what he called "the weighty voyage." With an instinct for the beckoning future, he carefully preserved many notes and documents.
William Bradford is elected governor, holding the position (except for 5 years) for the remainder of his life.

The earliest mention of Hall's name in a documented statement indicates that he was the slave of a Boston leather-dresser named William Hall in the late 1740s.
Sufficient pressure was applied by Governor John Hancock and the French consul in Boston to obtain the release of the men from the French island of St. Bartholomew.

 About the Bradford Journal
William Bradford, author of the journal, was not only an eyewitness to the early years of Plymouth Colony, he was a leader of the Pilgrim community.
The Bradford journal was presented to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is on deposit in the State Library in the State House in Boston.
William Bradford's manuscript journal is a vellum-bound volume measuring 11 1/2" by 7 3/4." There are 270 pages, numbered (sometimes inaccurately) by Bradford himself.

During his term as State Engineer, Hall built a number of navigation improvement projects for river commerce; gathered information eventually used to end hydraulic mining, proposed an integrated flood control system for the Sacramento Valley, compiled an abundance of data on irrigation, and called for long-range water planning by the State.
Hall's proposal to reform the state's system of water rights brought him the most opposition.
He was exonerated and went on to continue his work as a private consulting engineer to the federal government, California irrigation districts established under the 1887 Wright Act, and projects in South Africa and eastern Europe.

 William Hall Clawson (1879-1964) Co-Editor 1912-1935
Born in St. John, New Brunswick, on September 19, 1879, William Hall Clawson was educated at St. John Grammar School and from 1896 to 1900 attended the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, where he got a B.A. in Classics and English.
William John Alexander invited him to Toronto that Easter, gave the young man a dinner, and introduced him to the Department.
Over his 42 years of service at Toronto, he taught many eminent students, including the future Governor General, Vincent Massey, the poet Earle Birney, Margaret ("Peg") Stobie (who taught Old English at the University of Manitoba and taught this editor), and A. Woodhouse, the future Department head at University College.
