Hammesfahr said his credibility had been questioned at the time, but he has since been vindicated in court and currently maintains a thriving private practice in Clearwater, Fla. Despite reports attacking him, he said he has never lost his license to practice medicine and currently is involved in litigation surrounding the ordeal.
Hammesfahr said there are at least 50 physicians he knows of, in private practice and related to medical universities who have said Schiavo is not in a PVS or in a coma.
Hammesfahr said that about 30 percent of his cases are more severe than Terri Schiavo’s, and that she most likely could improve, whether by his approach or another.

Terry touted Hammesfahr's proposed treatment in a March 21 Los Angeles Times article, saying that Hammesfahr would try to persuade state senators by using a recording that showed Schiavo responding to commands and attempting to speak.
Hammesfahr was one of two doctors chosen by Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.

Hammesfahr's Web site also recommended TCD testing of "every patient who has a neurological deficit be evaluated for a vascular involvement and treated regardless of age or chronicity of the deficit." He claims that the test enables him to identify people at risk for vasospastic stroke before any clinical signs are apparent.
Although Hammesfahr states that the patients performed better when TCD measurement showed increased cerebral blood flow, the test protocol lacked controls -- so it is not possible to be certain that his observations were meaningful.
