William H. Carney was the first African American to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
Carney served with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and took part in the July 18, 1863 assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina.
Carney's face is shown on the monument to Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th on the Boston Common designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens.

Carney himself is depicted in the Saint- Gaudens monument which immortalizes Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and his intrepid colored troops.
In July 1863, the regiment was engaged in the disastrous battle at Fort Wagner.

Despite his wound, Carney refused to retreat until he removed the flag, and though successful, he was shot again in the process.
Carney eventually recovered and was discharged with disability on June 30, 1864.

My father, also named William, used the Underground Railroad to escape, then sent word back me. Then I escaped using the same route, and joined my father in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
I was the last Civil War veteran to receive the award, forty-one years later, in 1904.
