William Holden died of a fall at his home in Santa Monica, California in 1981 (his body was found on 16 November, but forensic evidence suggested he had died on 12 November).
Holden was cremated; his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.

With the latter portrayal, Holden's screen persona began to move into the darker areas that were further explored in later roles like that of the pessimistic POW suspected of being a Nazi informer, in Wilder's STALAG 17 (1953), a role which garnered Holden an Oscar.
Holden publicly credited her with launching his career and often wished that she would be given an Oscar.

William Woods Holden (24 November 1818 -- 1 March 1892) was the Republican governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina in 1865 and from 1868 to 1871.
William W. Holden had been a supporter of the secessionist movement at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War, but changed to the Republican Party as the war continued.
He was appointed Governor by President Andrew Johnson during occupation, but lost in the elections held later that year.

Holden received his first Best Actor nomination for his role as a struggling writer turned gigolo opposite Gloria Swanson's portrayal of fading actress Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's SUNSET BLVD. Besides Holden's nomination, the film received ten more including one for Best Picture of 1950.
In the third of Holden's four films with director Wilder, SABRINA, he played Humphrey Bogart's younger, playboy brother, David Larrabee, opposite Audrey Hepburn as the blossoming chauffeur's daughter in this 1954 romantic comedy which received six Oscar nominations.

 A Tribute to William Holden
Born on April 17, 1918, Holden came from a wealthy Pasadena family, and began acting for fun while studying chemistry at Pasadena Junior College.
He was discovered there by a Paramount executive, signed to a contract, and, after a couple of minor roles, cast as the title character opposite Barbara Stanwyck in Golden Boy (1939), beating out a mob of actors, including John Garfield.
It was during the making of this film that Stanwyck earned Holden's everlasting gratitude by coaching the neophyte and going to bat for him with studio executives.
