WILLIAM HOPE & THE CREWE CIRCLE
William Hope was one of the premiere spirit photographers of the early Twentieth Century and was considered by believers and supporters to be a true master of the art of producing spirits on ordinary photographic plates.
Hope was born in Crewe, England in 1863 and as a young man, went to work as a carpenter.
When Hope tried to confess his fraud to Colley, the other man dismissed his confession as "nonsense"-- he would recognize his mother when he saw her and the extra in the photo was certainly his mother, he stated.

Compleat Sword-Man - Sir William Hope
Hope is very much against the use of contretemps and time thrusts, as he recognises exchanged thrusts as a serious failure on the part of a sword-man. Rather than condemn the rapier/small-sword outright, as did Silver, he instead recommends a method based upon binding, beating, circular parries and left-hand parries (VM).
Hope seems aware of the need to be as direct as possible in such dangerous situations, experience possibly gained in his period of military service, about which I know nothing.
Hope therefore insists that the blow and the thrust are always taught together, at all weapons, and recommends a sword capable of both cutting and thrusting, a spadroon (or sheering sword) being favoured due to it's convenience for carrying.

 ISS: Biography of William Hope
For fear of being accused by devout Catholics to be in league with the devil, the circle destroyed all the original negatives until Archdeacon Colley came on the scene.
Hope thought it was more like a picture he had copied two years earlier.
Hope, in my view, was a genuine medium, but of a type of mentality which might easily lead to the opposite conclusion on the part of an unsympathetic observer."

Dani Zweig's Belated Reviews #32: William Hope Hodgson
Between 1907 and his death in 1918, William Hope Hodgson wrote some of the most unusual fantasy novels.
I've sometimes seen his books classified as supernatural horror: I'm not sure I agree with that classification, but it is true that his books share a key characteristic of horror, which is that they stand or fall on their ability to sustain a mood, rather than to tell a story.
William Hope Hodgson wrote fourteen or fifteen books, of which these are the best known.

 WILLIAM HOPE: Spirit Photographer
Then they personally placed their own plates in the camera, and they also removed them after the picture had been taken; after this, they accompanied William Hope into his darkroom and stayed with him while he developed the plates, so that they could be certain that at no time could any substitution take place.
The image caught on the plate was a stranger to her (then), but it turned out to be her spirit guide, a First World War soldier called William Hedley Wootton, who appeared complete with a dark shaded area over his temple where an enemy bullet had killed him.
