Hopkins is interested in the movement of contaminants through communities via trophic mechanisms, with most emphasis placed on chronic dietary uptake of contaminants by high trophic level predators (e.g., snakes).
Hopkins’ previous research experience at Mercer University’s Medical School, Auburn University, and the University of South Carolina includes quantification of diverse physiological responses of invertebrates and vertebrates to natural and anthropogenic stressors.
In his spare time, Dr. Hopkins serves on the editorial boards of two journals, as a toxicologist on the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Center for Birds of Prey, and as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Minefilling Power Plant Wastes.

Hopkins became chairman of the Republican county committee and a member of the election board and, with the approval of both political parties, became Cleveland's first city manager in 1924.
Hopkins married Ellen Louise Cozad in 1903; they had no children and divorced in 1926.

William Hopkins has been studying the effect of selenium (Se) on various reptiles and amphibians for years on the Savannah River Site, a U.S. Department of Energy site in Aiken, S.C., where coal-powered energy has produced areas contaminated with selenium and arsenic.
Using two species of snakes (banded water snakes and brown house snakes) and blood and tail tissue biopsies, Hopkins found strong positive correlation among selenium concentrations in blood, biopsies and tissues of toxicological concern (e.g., liver and eggs).
Hopkins and colleagues tested their mathematical models in another recent paper published in Environmental Pollution.
