Hovell and Hume, it is hoped will be admitted a happy opportunity for their present, though late introduction of the results of their laborious undertaking to the public, not only on account of the important intrinsic value of their labors, but from their almost inseparable connection with those of the latter traveller.

In December 1853 Hovell was entertained at a public dinner in Geelong, his speech was inadequately reported in some of the newspapers, and Hume considered that Hovell had endeavoured to claim all the credit for their joint expedition.
Hovell's later discovery of coal during his visit to Western Port was also important; it is remarkable that the discovery was overlooked for a long period.

An aging River Red Gum, inscribed by the explorer William Hovell during his historic expedition in 1824, has been cloned by CSIRO foresters, allowing the tree's genes to live on long after it has died.
William Hovel carved the words Hovell NovR17/24 into the trunk of the Hovell Tree while he camped with fellow explorer Hamilton Hume on the banks of the Murray River near what is now the NSW town of Albury.
Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to cross the Murrumbidgee River and discover the massive 'Hume River', which was later re-named the Murray.

Impressed with the grassy flats at the southern edge of the marshes, Hovell attempted to head north to the ranges but was forced to abandon his efforts after 15 or 20 km as the marsh proved such an obstacle, permitting the party to travel only about 6 km in six hours.
