  William John Burchell
Burchell, who never married after that experience, left for Cape Town in 1810.
Burchell spent the next decade back in Fulham, arranging his specimens and writing up his results.
During his time at Fulham many enthusiasts visited Burchell to see his collections, and one of those who saw "Burchell's Clivia" was instrumental in locating and importing living specimens to Britain, some time in the 1820's.

Burchell was first and foremost a botanist; he was a meticulous collector and his specimens all had accurate dates, localities and field notes of an ecological nature.
Burchell was the first to describe the White Rhinoceros from the Kuruman area in the Northern Cape in 1817.

An Englishman, William John Burchell (1781-1863), was the first to bring to the scientific world the discovery of a Lithops in 1811; found near the town of Pierska in the northern Cape Province of South Africa.
Burchell was an ethnographer, geologist, meteorologist, cartographer, botanist, zoologist and artist who explored and collected plants in South Africa from 1811 to 1815.
Burchell gave this new, unusually small, ground level succulent plant the name Mesembryanthemum turbiniforme and it was published in the first of two volumes of his book ``Travels in the Interior of Southern Africa'' in 1822.

The word zebra may be derived from zecora, these animals' name in Galla, a language of Ethiopia, or from the Congolese word zebra.
He donated many of his specimens to the British Museum and then fell out with the museum authorities when some of the specimens were damaged.
Reportedly, this fight led John Edward Gray, a museum keeper, to dub the zebra Asinus (from the Latin for ass and fool) burchelli when he described it scientifically.
