 Rocky Road: William Conybeare
William Conybeare was an astute scientist who devoted much of his life to paleontology, yet his interest in fossils came after his devotion to religion.
Conybeare found a jaw and a badly damaged skull that he believed to belong to the plesiosaur.
Conybeare eschewed mentioning Anning by name, and when he did refer to her, he used the term "proprietor" as if to emphasize that her only interest in fossils was monetary.

William paid more than once for the gift, moreover, for John Conybeare prepared selections from Beowulf and his long collation for the press by 1821, but then never got around to correcting all the proof sheets before his death in 1824.
Conybeare's library, he discovered, housed 'every volume in Saxon literature that had ever been published, except a few pages of a Saxon homily, which he had not got' (41).
An enduring value of Conybeare's original collation in his copy of Thorkelin is that it shows, by Conybeare's practice of under-pointing lost letters, the considerable amount of deterioration along the damaged edges of the manuscript in the time between the Thorkelin transcripts and his collation.

Of the great men from Cambridge's Trinity College who have made a significant contribution to the cause of Christ, F. Farrar (1831-1903), at one time a minister in London's famous Westminster Abbey and later Dean of Canterbury, deserves to be remembered.
One biographer wrote of him that he "exerted a vast popular influence upon the religious feeling and culture of the middle classes for fully forty years by virtue of his boundless industry." In considering the value of Dean Farrar's writings, the words of John W. Foster need constantly to be borne in mind.

 J. W. McGarvey's Preachers' Methods.
For example, the books containing the scattered statutes of the Mosaic law are a group by themselves; the prophets before the captivity, the prophets of the captivity, and the prophets after the captivity are three other groups.
In the New Testament the four Gospels are a group having common subject-matter, and yet John's Gospel, if grouped according to time, would stand with his three epistles and the Apocalypse, as the latest writings of the New Testament.
It is scarcely saying too much of this work to assert that to the man who has not studied it, it offers a new revelation on Acts of Apostles and the Epistles of Paul.
