  Thomas Coryate - LoveToKnow 1911
THOMAS CORYATE (157; ?-1617), English traveller and writer, was born at Odcombe, Somersetshire, where his father, the Rev. George Coryate, prebendary of York Cathedral, was rector.
Coryate was a curious and observant traveller; he gives accounts of inscriptions he had copied, of the antiquities of the towns he passed through, and of manners and customs, from the Italian pronunciation of Latin to the new-fangled use of forks.
Coryate's Crudities, with his letters from India, was reprinted from the edition of 1611 in 1776, and at the Glasgow University Press (2 vols., 1905).

§39. William Johnson (Cory). VI. Lesser Poets of the Middle and Later Nineteenth Century. Vol. 13. The Victorian ...
Exquisiteness and idiosyncrasy, rather than fullness, magnificence and force of general appeal, were the characteristics of the work in verse (his prose was singularly nervous and virile) of the author of Ionica—the double-edged punning title of the poems of William Johnson, otherwise Cory.
Johnson, whose object was to keep as much of the tone and style of the Greek anthologists as could be saturated with nineteenth-century temper and tone, could not have avoided the appearance of modern paganism if he would.
In the inevitable, and, indeed, quite legitimate and instructive, comparison with Landor, it is this which chiefly distinguishes Johnson.

William Johnson Cory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Johnson Cory (1823 - 1892, born William Johnson) was a poet, born at Torrington, and educated at Eton, where he was afterwards a renowned master, nicknamed Tute (short for "tutor") by his pupils.
The historian G. Prothero described him as "the most brilliant Eton tutor of his day." Arthur Coleridge described him as "the wisest master who has ever been at Eton." In 1872 he resigned from his position at Eton under a cloud of suspicion for improper relations with boys.
Cory is well noted for a letter in which he poignantly and succinctly articulates the purpose of education.

 Carl Ketcham
Cory, then, does at least mention the names of Jane and John in the same book; and on this basis Constance Pilgrim speculates as to how his remarks might lend support to the idea that Jane and John met in Devon while John’s ship was delayed there by contrary winds.
Cory, then, had heard of the lover, and believed that he entered into Jane’s portrait of an eight-years-lost (but ultimately surviving) sea-captain, a rank which John eventually held (though not, of course, in the navy).
Indeed Cory, as Dear Jane indicates, was not the first to appear in print with the identification of Jane as Anne Elliot, nor to associate her (if that was his intention) with a real naval officer.

And its light is ever shinning upon the luminous figure of Democracy, the ideal Mother of human hopes, the hopes of the rejected, of the denied, of the subjected individual.
It unfolds to the numberless flowers of the Spring; it waves in the branches of the trees and in the green blades of grass; it haunts the depths of the earth and the sea, and gleams out in the hues of the shell and the precious stone.

William Johnson (1823-92), who later added the name Cory on acquiring an estate, is described by Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy in The Public School Phenomenon as “one of the most interesting and also tragic figures of the 19th century.” I refer interested readers to Chapter 8 of Gathorne-Hardy’s fine book for the details.
The evidence is good that Cory was a tad too interested in some of his pupils.

[minstrels] Heraclitus -- William Johnson Cory
Cory translates an epigram of Callimachus, which in A. Mair's translation of the Greek is as follows: "One told me, Heracleitus, of thy death and brought me to tears, and I remembered how often we two in talking put the sun to rest.
The Heraclitus of this poem is Heraclitus of Halicarnassus, and Cory's excellent poem seems to be a translation of Callimachus' epitaph for him.
From: Chris Lillie Christopher Martin I read your notes on Heraclitus, questioning whether it really was the philosopher to whom the poem is addressed.
