Archbishop William Joseph Levada was born in Long Beach, California, on June 15, 1936, to Joseph Levada, Jr., and Lorraine Nunez Levada, both natives of Concord in the San Francisco Bay area.
William Levada was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend Martin J. O'Connor, Rector of the North American College, on December 20, 1961, coincidentally his father's sixty-first birthday.

As long as we have a redirect from William Levada and William J. Levada, it doesn't matter.
It is my observation that Levada's sudden rise from a metropolitan archbishop to pro-Prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith is remarkable.
Hypothetically, if Levada or Law were charged and summoned to the courts of the United States, they can refuse, be charged with contempt and given a warrant valid internationally in countries that have formed treaties allowing it.

Pope Benedict, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was prefect of the doctrinal congregation from 1981 until the death of Pope John Paul II in April.
In the 1980s, Archbishop Levada collaborated with then-Cardinal Ratzinger as one of a small group of bishops appointed to write the "Catechism of the Catholic Church." In November 2003 he began a three-year term as chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Doctrine.
William Joseph Levada was born June 15, 1936, in Long Beach, Calif. His great-grandparents immigrated to California from Portugal and Ireland in the 1860s.
