In 1153 (18 Steven) William, the 5th Earl of Kendal took the name of Lancaster by permission on Henry II (1154-1189) and married Gundred, the widow of the Earl of Warwick.
On the death of William, the honor of Lancaster passed to his youger brother, Gilbert, whose son, Warin, married Helewise the daughter of Stuteville, lord of Knaresborough.
William succeeded to the honor of Lancaster, restored to the king's favour, and was also High Sheriff of Lancashire from 18 Henry III (1241) until his death in 30 Henry III (1246).

William lived in Lancaster (he was recognized as a Lancaster resident in a 1739 land deal) in the Chocksett Parish, formed 1742 as Congregational, with records from 1744 and later became Unitarian.
William's last will and testament is an interesting insight into the legal process circa 1784, his family relations and what a man who lived until the age 84 would acquire and dispose of during his life.

William Lycurgus Lancaster, Wetumpka, Elmore County, was born near Tallassee, in the same county, March 4, 1869, and was the son of the late Judge John Austin and Francis Aldoro (Lett) Lancaster, of Wetumpka, and grandson of R.P. and Minerva (Ramsey) Lett, of Elmore County.
Lancaster farmed in Wilcox and Marengo counties for two years; merchandised in Wetumpka for eight years; and organized the bank of Wetumpka, of which he later became the president.
He was nominated for State Treasurer in the Democratic Primary, April 6, 1914; and November 3, 1914, was formally elected to that position, his opponents being J. Atkins, Republican; John S. Sutterer, Progressive, and John Norton, Socialist.

The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, has been owned and operated by the Fairfield Heritage Association since 1982.
The birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his brother, U.S. Senator John Sherman, has been a memorial to the family since 1951, when the Ohio Historical Society first administered the site.
