William Machin Stairs, born January 21, 1789 in (additional info and facts about Halifax, Nova Scotia) Halifax, Nova Scotia, (A nation in northern North America; the French were the first Europeans to settle in mainland Canada) Canada — died there on November 28, 1865, was a merchant, a banker, and a statesman.
There, both John Stairs and his wife passed away and their five children, including the eight-year-old William Machin Stairs, returned to Halifax to be raised by a maternal uncle.
Stairs was also active in politics, serving as mayor of Halifax from 1847 to 1848 and then as a Member of the Nova Scotia General Assembly and as a Legislative Councillor.

William Machin Stairs was the son of John Stairs (1749-1797) who had emigrated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
A member of the Glasite Christian church, William Machin Stairs was married to Margaret Wiseman (1793-1850) with whom he had nine children.

John Fitzwilliam Stairs, also known as John Fitz William Stairs (January 19, 1848 – September 26, 1904) was an entrepreneur and statesman, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, a member of the prominent Stairs family of merchants and shippers founded by William Machin Stairs (1789-1865) that included the Victorian era explorer, William Grant Stairs.
He was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly in 1879, resigning in 1882 to successfully run for election to the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa where he served as a Conservative Party member until 1896.
Max Aitken was at Stairs' bedside when he passed away in Toronto, Ontario, where he was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

In 1793 Joanna Stairs died during a yellow fever epidemic, and her husband sent the five children back to Halifax to be cared for by their uncle, John Stayner.
William never again saw his father, but his uncle, a tanner, treated him with consideration and gave him a basic education at the Halifax Grammar School.
Stairs began his legislative career as a supporter of the hybrid coalition of Tories and Reformers organized in 1840.

Machin, the subject of this sketch, was born at Basby, England, April 7, 1813, and by industry and economy was enabled, at the age of twenty-five, to provide a home for himself and wife.
He was married in Walcott, England, to Elizabeth Girton, May 15, 1838, she being his playmate in childhood, friend in youth, and advisor in early manhood.
At the end of the year he was apprenticed to William Wyley to learn the tailor’s trade, and served several years; but finding the business uncongenial to his tastes, he bought his time of his master, and commenced for himself.
