  Samuel Colt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Samuel Colt (July 19, 1814 – January 10, 1862), born in Hartford, Connecticut, was the inventor of the Colt revolver, and founder of the Colt Firearms company.
Colt received a European patent for his revolver in 1835, and an American patent in 1836.
Colt's new factory was based upon the American system of manufacturing he observed at Whitney's plant, but Colt advanced this system to create what would be recognized as the first industrialized firearm factory in the world.

In 1836 Samuel Colt (1814-1862) conceived the idea for a repeating handgun whose rotating cylinder was turned by the action of the trigger.
Colt appreciated the importance of developing machinery to produce standardized, interchangeable parts.
Colt encouraged Root to mechanize revolver production whenever possible, and Root designed the advanced drop hammers, boring machines, gauges, jigs and fixtures that made the Colt revolver the first handgun in the world to be produced with truly interchangeable parts.

 Colt Army 1860 Richards Conversion K D Lewitzka Collection of Classic Arms
Smith and Wesson held a patent on the bullet, as we know it today, but apparently it was overturned by the US Government so as not to impede the development of firearms.
In 1871, Colt employee Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt percussion models to breech loading cartridge revolvers.
Then in1872, William Mason another Colt employee, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the original Richards patent.

 Cimarron’s Richards-Mason Conversion Revolver
Colt employees Charles B. Richards and William Mason had been granted patents for the conversion of the percussion revolvers, which were readily accepted by shooters of that era.
The original.44 Colt was one of a very few.44 center fire cartridges to actually use bullets of.44 caliber, throwing a 210 grain bullet of.444 diameter.
The rear sight on this revolver is a notch on the hammer as on the percussion Colt revolvers, and the original Richards-Mason sixguns.

Before William Mason’s Single Action ("SA") patent invention improvement in 1872, Gustave Young and L.D. Nimschke engraved most of the magnificent predecessor Colts of various types.
Carved grips on an engraved SA are equally striking under a magnifying glass or at a distance, such as in Colt’s famous "Patches" advertising poster from the 1920’s.
Colt’s "Patches" and other ads continued to fuel the interest in the steerhead motif.

William’s wife, Mary Augusta, who was born 27 October 1833, died 3 January 1914 and was buried in the Elmore Family Cemetery on the old Anderson Elmore farm, some two miles west of Alberta.

Open Top revolvers were manufactured during the same period of time that gave us the percussion conversion models of Richard's and Richard's-Mason type but Open Top's were manufactured as an entirely new model and did not use parts interchangeable with the conversion models.
On July2, 1872, William Mason another Colt employee, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the original Richards patent.
The Richards-Mason conversions differed from the earlier guns in that the sight remained on the hammer nose, as it did in the percussion models.

During this same period, Remington manufactured a cap & ball revolver which was actually a more practical weapon than the Colt, and those soldiers who could afford a Remington, bought them as their personal combat weapons.
What made the Remington more desirable than the Colt was that the Remington had a top strap, making the gun stronger, and the cylinder removal and replacement system was much faster and more efficient than that of the Colt.
Two employees of the Colt Firearms Co., Charles Richards and William Mason, obtained a patent on the means by which a cap & ball revolver could be converted to fire cartridges.
