William McIntosh started his academic career at Madras College in 1843, later entering the University of St Andrews at the age of 15 to follow a well-rounded education in classics, mathematics, French, political economy and the sciences.
McIntosh was appointed Superintendent of the new Murthly Mental Hospital, outside Perth, in 1863 thus acquiring the stability and financial resources needed to continue his interests in Zoology.
McIntosh, however, could not accept that his scientific career was over and he continued to occupy a room at the Gatty, supporting his own work and organising Open Days and Conversaziones for the public with his sister Agnes.

Called Tustunnugee Hutkee (White Warrior), William McIntosh was the son of Captain William McIntosh, a member of a prominent Savannah, Georgia family sent into the Creek Nation to recruit them to fight for the British during the Revolutionary War.
McIntosh's home served as an inn and tavern on the Federal Road where it crossed the Chattahoochee, and because the River was then above its banks, some travelers had decided to spend the night there, hoping the waters would recede.
McIntosh's son Chilly and another mixed-blood escaped from an outbuilding they were sleeping in because there wasn't room for everybody in the main house.

McIntosh was a cousin of William Weatherford and Georgia Governor George M. Troup.
Despite the fact the Upper Creeks (including McIntosh) had vowed to kill anyone who signed away any more Indian land, McIntosh, along with eight other chiefs, on February 12, 1825 signed the Treaty of Indian Springs; thus relinquishing all the Creeks' land in Georgia in exchange for $400,000.
If his enemies had waited much longer, McIntosh wouldn't have been there, as he was planning to leave that morning to look over land promised him along the Arkansas River.
