William McWillie migrated to Mississippi from South Carolina, but, unlike most other antebellum Mississippians who migrated to the state, he did not come during his early childhood.
McWillie, who was born in the Kershaw District of South Carolina on November 17, 1795, had also served four years in the South Carolina Legislature.
Under the provisions of the 1855 constitutional amendment, Governor McWillie was inaugurated November 16, 1857.

McWillie had worked in Cuba for years, mostly for New York racketeer Meyer Lansky, McWillie was never clear to anyone on exactly what it was he did for Lansky, telling the Warren Commission only that he was a "key man" at Lansky's Tropicana Casino in Cuba.
McWillie did as he was told, and created a job for himself at Sinatra's casino, working under the title of "pit boss," but McWillie, a trained card sharp, was no mere pit boss as he made himself out to be.

McWILLIE, William, governor of Mississippi, born near Liberty Hill, Kershaw district, South Carolina, 17 November, 1795; died in Kirkwood, Mississippi, 3 March, 1869.
He was preparing for college when the regiment commanded by his father, Colonel Adam McWillie, was ordered to Haddrell's point during the war of 1812.
He became adjutant, and served until the close of the campaign, when he entered South Carolina college, and was graduated there in 1817.

William McWillie, born in Kershaw district, South Carolina, November 17th, 1795, migrated to Mississippi in 1845, was elected Governor in November, 1857, and was inducted into office in January, 1858, thus becoming the fifteenth chief magistrate of the commonwealth, and the tenth chosen under the Constitution of 1832.
He was always regarded as a gentleman of education and honor, and four years after he made his home in Mississippi he was nominated and elected to Congress, where he served from December, 1849, to March 4th, 1851.

Stockton was informed of this revolt by the ¨Paul Revere¨ of California, Lean John, and promised to make quick work of the uprising and their leaders by sending Captain William Mervine and a ship to San Pedro.
As Captain Mervine landed his 350 men on October 7, 1846, Gillespie, seeing Mervine and his force land, immediately scrapped the truce made with the Californios.
