Fishback, William Meade (5 Nov. 1831-9 Feb. 1903), politician and governor of Arkansas, was born in Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of Frederick Fishback, a prosperous farmer, and Sophia Ann Yates.
Fishback was always something of an outsider within the Democratic party.
He was defeated for the gubernatorial nomination in 1888 but in 1892 received the nomination and was elected governor.

William Fishback graduated from the University of Virginia in 1855, studied law, and then moved to Illinois where he was admitted to the bar in 1857.
Fishback was a delegate to the 1874 Arkansas Constitutional Convention, and was a member of the Arkansas Legislature from 1871 to 1881.
For this advocacy, Fishback won (and bore proudly) the sobriquet of “the great repudiator.” On September 5, 1892, he was elected Arkansas's 17th governor, and during his tenure, the St. Francis levee district was organized.

Fishback established a unionist newspaper, The Unconditional Union, in 1863, and recruited approximately 900 men for the Fourth Arkansas Cavalry.
Fishback was a delegate to the 1874 Arkansas Constitutional Convention, and was a member of the Arkansas Legislature from 1871 to 1881.
He introduced what is known as the "Fishback Amendment" to the state constitution, which prohibited the state authorities from paying the Holford railroad aid and levee bonds.

William Meade Fishback, presidential elector at large for Arkansas in 1888, is a native of Jeffersonton, Culpeper Co., Va., and was born in November, 1831.
Frederick Fishback was born in the same house as his father, and on February 14, 1813.
The Fishbacks were originally from Germany, and made their first settlement at Fredericktown, Md. This town was named after the owner of the land on which it is situated, who was Frederick Fishback.

William Frazier was building the stairway; John Finlason and his wife Katherina were operating the tavern; and other residents of the Germanna village were William Barnes, John Arnold, John Lee, and Peter Corbin.
On August 6, 1729, William Russell was ordered to mend the bridge at the fountain and to clear a road up to the courthouse and keep same in good repair.
