Biographies of Sir William M. Ramsay -- by J.G.C. Anderson
RAMSAY, SIR WILLIAM MITCHELL (1851-1939), classical scholar and archaeologist and the foremost authority of his day on the topography, antiquities, and history of Asia Minor in ancient times, was born in Glasgow 15 March 1851, the Youngest son of Thomas Ramsay, by his wife, Jane, daughter of William Mitchell, both of Alloa.
Ramsay was knighted in 1906 and received many academic distinctions: three honorary fellowships of Oxford colleges (Exeter, 1898, Lincoln, 1899, and St. John's, 1912) and honorary degrees from six British universities and from New York, Bordeaux, and Marburg.
Ramsay's title to distinction is the immense advance, based upon a rich harvest of new evidence, which he achieved in the knowledge of the geography and topography of Asia Minor and of its political, social, and cultural (including religious) history.

Biographies of Sir William M. Ramsay -- by W. Ward Gasque
William Mitchell Ramsay was born the youngest son of a third-generation lawyer in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 15, 1851.
Ramsay had made to himself a European reputation as an explorer of Asia Minor at a cost which another man would think scarcely sufficient for the tour of Germany; and it had become his principle, as, for similar reasons, it has become Petrie's, to suffer none but the barest means to his end.
Perhaps the least known of Sir William Ramsay's contributions to the study of ancient history and geography are the articles he wrote for the five volumes of Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible between 1898 and 1904.

 Allan Ramsay
Ramsay himself, it is said, wished to have been a painter; and his step-father has been reflected on as acting with niggardly sharp-sightedness, in refusing to comply with his wishes.
Ramsay was the first to establish such a business in Scotland, and it appears that he did so, not without some opposition from the more serious part of the community, who found fault with him for lending the loose plays of that age to persons whose morals were liable to be tainted by them.
Ramsay on this occasion addressed a rhyming complaint to the court of session, which was first printed in the Gentleman’s Magazine, and since in all the editions that have been given of his works.

Sir William Ramsay's exposition of the letters to the seven churches of Asia has continued to attract readers for the greater part of a century and it is likely to remain of interest well into the next century.
More recent scholars, such as Colin Hemer, have brought Ramsay's research up-to-date in the light of more recent research; however, it is always good to go back to the fountainhead of such a study.
Ramsay's work remains a classic in the field and should be a part of every Bible scholar's personal library.

Ramsay infers much more about the "Nicolaitans", whom the letters denounce in unrestrained terms, than the evidence seems to warrant, and his statements about the "Flavian persecution", whose very existence is doubted by many scholars, should be read with caution.
Ramsay took the traditionalist side in the scholarly debates concerning the early Church, but this work is not in a controversial vein.

When constructing a chronology, there are those who put Acts on par with the letters, claiming that Acts is written by a first-rate historian, Luke, who was well equipped to compose a history of Paul's life.
Others claim that Acts is of no value to a chronological study of Paul's life and that it is only after one sheds the details of Acts that an accurate chronology (taken from the letters only) can be attained.

Bruce, Michael Grant, Kenneth Kitchen, and William Lane Craig are the more widely-read scholars who argue for the historicity of the Bible.
In the period between 1800 and the mid 1900's there were a number of Biblical apologists who argued for the historicity of the Bible such as: William Mitchell Ramsay (1851-1939), William Henry Green (1825 - 1900), James Orr (1844-1913)[5], Robert Dick Wilson (1856–1930)[6][7], and Oswald T. Allis (1856-1930).
Numerous arguments have been put forth by legal scholars such as Simon Greenleaf, John Warwick Montgomery and others stating that western legal standards argue for the historicity of the resurrection of Christ.
