Edward Montagu, 2nd earl of Manchester (1602-1671), eldest son of the 1st earl by his first wife, Catherine Spencer, granddaughter of Sir John Spencer of Althorpe, was born in 1602, and was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
WILLIAM MONTAGU, 5th duke of Manchester (1768-1843), second son of the preceding, was educated at Harrow, and having become a colonel in the army in 1794, was appointed governor of Jamaica in 1808.
William was succeeded by his son George Victor Drogo, 8th duke of Manchester (1853-1892), on whose death the title devolved on his son, William Angus Drogo, 9th duke of Manchester (b.18 77).

The Earldom of Manchester was created for Henry Montagu, 1st Viscount Mandeville, who served in several public offices, including as Recorder of London, Lord Chief Justice of England, Lord High Treasurer and Lord Privy Seal.
The 4th Duke of Manchester was another member of the family who was a politician; he was a very active member of the House of Lords.

This was occupied by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu in his official capacity as Master of the Wardrobe to Charles II and William III.
Ralph Montagu's grandfather, Sir Ralph Winwood was principal Secretary to James I. The oldest part was a tower said to have been built by Sir John de Molines in the reign of Edward III of Richard II, and the house was thought to have been rebuilt by Sir Ralph Winwood.
In 1731-3 John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, 'erected a large and substatial house with outhouses and appurtenances thereto belonging', with the assistance of Henry Flitcroft (1697 - 1769).

Angus Charles Drogo Montagu, Duke of Manchester, was a complete incompetent with a history of failed confidence games, and his life stands as a signal refutation to the notion that a hereditary aristocracy is of any benefit to a nation.
The 4th Duke was the Master of the Horse and Lord Chamberlain (roughly equivalent to the American Speaker of the House, or Senate President) to King George III, and the 5th Duke was the Governor of Jamaica.
The 12th Duke of Manchester was born at the family seat in Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire (pre-sale, of course) in 1938.

In 1602 William Bispham a Citizen of London had held the Manor as security of a debt, until the debt, with damages and costs, should be satisfied.
The roof was restored in 1872 and the Lych gate was erected in 1923 as a memorial to the Rev. William Ritson, M.A., Vicar of Rivington for thirty-nine years from 1879 to 1918, and in 1923 also electric lighting was installed in the church and the vicarage.
