Richard Morris Hunt was the first American to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and, after his return to New York, he became the most prominent architect in the city.
Hunt became exposed to the idea of architecture in Europe when his mother took her family there to visit for a year -- they would stay for more than a decade.

William Morris Hunt was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, and descended from a long line of illustrious Vermonters, including his father, Jonathan Hunt, who served as a judge and one of Vermont's representatives to congress.
When Hunt settled in Boston in 1862, it was his enthusiasm for the Barbizon painters that led Bostonians to be among the earliest patrons and collectors of their paintings and of Millet's work in particular.

HUNT, William Morris, artist, born in Brattleboro, Vermont, 31 March, 1824; died in Appledore, Isles of Simals, New Hampshire, 8 September, 1879.
Hunt executed two ambitious allegorical mural paintings for the state capitol at Albany, entitled "The Flight of Night" and "The Discoverer." His "Talks on Art" were taken down and published by one of his pupils, Miss Helen M. Knowlton (2 vols., Boston, 1875).
He is a member of various associations of architects, and was made a chevalier of the Legion of honor in 1884.

The work of Morris is characterized by an emphasis on decorative elements, especially on those that he thought to be characteristic of the art of the Middle Ages.
On the one hand there were the comparatively simple, plain and utilitarian designs as exemplified by the Sussex chair and the ladderback chair; and on the other, pieces which were ornate in the extreme, with elaborate decoration and painted panels of pre-Raphaelite subjects by Burne-Jones, Madox Brown, or Rossetti.
In 1857 he had designed and made for himself an oak table, which he stained green: this kind of colored finish was adopted by the firm and applied to many of the simpler pieces and became a distinguishing feature.

Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island was designed between 1889-92 by Richard Morris Hunt for William Kissam Vanderbilt, grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
The house, an eleven million dollar summer cottage, was given by William Kissam Vanderbilt as a birthday present to his spouse, Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt.
In addition, the use of strong colors such as deep blue, ruby red and green glass painted with an opaque brown pigment was a common technique of stained glass craftsmanship demonstrated at the time.
