William Nicholson was born at Newark, Nottinghamshire and, aged sixteen, went to study with the well known artist Hubert von Herkomer.
In 1893 Nicholson married the painter Mabel Pryde and their first son Ben, born the following year, went on to become the famous painter and sculptor.
After 1900 Nicholson concentrated more on oil paintings and although he produced landscapes and still lifes he really established himself as a portrait painter.

David Cohen on William Nicholson at Paul kasmin
Rolling lowlands, luxurious still-life objects, a lady lounging in a Whistlerian interior, and a snoozing pug are rendered with a fluent, bravura painterliness that belongs as much to a bygone age as the pastoral and urbane experiences it conveys.
Nicholson revels in the distortive reflections of necklaces and a louchely limp, turquoise glove in the concavity of the 18th-century vessel of the title (a prize Hester Bateman in the artist’s collection).
This lends scale to the otherwise near-abstractness of horizontals and verticals in the depiction of moon-drenched ripples and protruding rock exposed in the wet sand.

When England knighted William Nicholson in 1936, it was in recognition of his international prominence as a painter of still lifes, lucid and sedate landscapes, and portraits, including such English luminaries as Max Beerbohm, Ellen Terry, and J. Barrie.
While Nicholson's stature as a painter has not diminished since his death in 1949, his original accomplishments in the fields of graphic art, stage design, and book illustration have enjoyed greater critical attention, as has his work in children's literature.
Nicholson's An Alphabet (1898) and The Square Book of Animals (1900), sold both to collectors of art and to children, anticipated the modern elevation of children's book illustration to the leve.....

William Nicholson - Biography - Moviefone
A writer of distinctively British sensibilities who possesses the keen ability to portray sympathetic and eccentric characters in extraordinary situations, screenwriter/director William Nicholson directed numerous documentaries for the BBC before moving into feature film work.
It was likely during this time that Nicholson developed and refined his noted humanistic approach and his affection towards stories dealing with humans' constant search for meaning in life and nature.
Nicholson continued writing dramatic biographical screenplays, with subjects ranging from the consequences of abortion A Private Matter (1992) to the exploration of the quest for cultural identity Grey Owl (1999), while also exploring similarly themed issues in fictional form with his screenplays for Sweet As You Are (1987) and Nell (1994).

Schwartz also portrays Nicholson’s personal life in a more complex light, finding that it was a series of rivalries and collaborations with many individuals and that Nicholson’s uneasy relationship with his son Ben plagued him for years.
This book provides the reader with a sense of why Nicholson's work matters, whether it be the delights of the early woodcuts with their essential Britishness, the beauties of the landscapes, and finally the still lifes, with the tendency toward silvery and reflective materials.
The discussion of Nicholson's art was what made this book memorable for me. The book probably provides the reader with the most complete listing of these works, along with discriptions of how Nicholson came to paint them in the manner in which he did.
