Duval County's first courthouse was built in the 1840's at what is now the corner of Forsyth and Market Streets.
Duval County merged with the city of Jacksonville in 1968; in area if not in population, Jacksonville is now one of the largest cities in America.
The building in the middle is the current Duval courthouse, still in use but suffering from overcrowding; plans are under way for remodeling or construction of a new courthouse.

William Pope DuVal (September 4, 1784–March 19, 1854) was the first governor of Florida Territory, serving from April 17, 1822 until April 24, 1834.
William DuVal was born to Major William DuVal and Ann Pope in Mount Comfort, Virginia (near present-day Richmond).
During an outbreak of Indian hostilities in 1812, DuVal was given command of a company of mounted Volunteers.

Western Duval County is characterized by deep soils with loamy surface layers and loamy or clayey subsoils, and loamy soils with indurated caliche at shallow to moderate depths.
Duval County's climate has likely remained unchanged for centuries, but beginning in the late nineteenth century cattle ranching, which was the county's main industry, and farming have had significant effects on the county's vegetation and water supply.
Duval County had 20,667 cattle, excluding milk cows, in 1920; in 1940 the total was 49,025, and in the mid-1950s the county was considered one of the state's leading beef producers.

DUVAL, William P., lawyer, born in Virginia in 1784; died in Washington, D. C., 19 March 1854.
His great-grandfather was a French Huguenot, who settled in Virginia, his grandfather a member of the house of burgesses, and his father, Major William, an officer of the Revolution, who possessed a high reputation as a chancery lawyer, spent a large fortune in helping the poor, and enjoyed the friendship of Washington.
"His brother, John Pope Duval, lawyer, born in Richmond, Virginia, 3 June 1790; died in Florida about 1855, was educated at Washington College and at William and Mary, studied law in Richmond, and was admitted to practice in 1811.

In 1828, Florida's territorial Governor William P. DuVal wrote a letter to Joseph M. White, a territorial delegate in which he stressed a great need for a lighthouse at the St. Marks location.
Williams felt that the tower should be constructed with solid walls and, therefore, refused to accept the work.
He oversaw its completion and in 1831 Williams, satisfied that the light was built according to the contract, accepted the work.

Emilie de Tessier, who used the pseudonym Marie Duval, was the wife of British comics artist Charles Henry Ross.
Ross was the artist and Duval the writer of the 'Ally Sloper' series, which was launched on August 14, 1867 in Judy magazine.
Ross and Duval left the comic in the 1880s, and it was continued by William G. Baxter.

The location of wrecking stations, or points of rendezvous; was determined partly by their proximity to the more dangerous portions of the reef, partly by the availability of good harbors and fresh water-factors which later were to control American settlements on the keys.
Governor DuVal, after talking to Richard Fitzpatrick, of Key West, on the subject of wrecking, advised the Legislative Council in 1825 that a law to license wreckers was de sirable.
