William Kellogg, William Pitt Kellogg and Abraham Lincoln were among the strong forces that reorganized the Whig Party into the current Republican Party from 1858 to 1860.
On April 13, WPK resigned as chief justice of Nebraska and was appointed as the Collector of Revenue of the Port of New Orleans.
Kellogg was the object of an assassination attempt, and, to avoid yellow fever, spent most summers travelling in the North.

Peebles, was a descendant of Rev. James Fitch, of Cooking, England, born December 24, 1622; came to America in 1638; was ordained minister of the church at Saybrook, Connecticut, in 1643; married Abigail, daughter of Rev. Henry Whitefield, the first minister of Guilford, Connecticut, and one of the founders of that town.

Kellogg donated the Arabian Horse Ranch, 87 horses and $600,000 to the state of California for the use of the University of California.

Clarence William, the son of William and Clara (Neilson) Koppen, was born Oct. 19, 1917, in rural Rockwell.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William Alexander and Dollie Edith (Petitt) Tedder; Ira Alonzo and Clara Belle (Fletcher) Schoonmaker; her parents, Elvin Bryan and Helen Virginia (Schoonmaker) Tedder; and a brother, Donald William Tedder.

But a quarrel broke out among the Republicans (1872), the result of which was the installation of two governors and legislatures, one stipported by the Democrats and Liberal Republicans and the other by the radical Republicans, the former being certainly elected by the people.
The rivalry of these two state governments, clashes of arms, the recognition by the Federal authorities of the radical Republican government (Pinchback and Kellogg, successively governors) followed.
One historic clash in New Orleans (on the 14th of September 1874) between the White League (White Mans Party) and the Republican police is commemorated by a monument, and the day is regarded by Louisianans as a sort of state independenceday.

 William Pitt Kellogg, Colonel, United States Army
The McEnery party finally appealed to arms, alleging that the Kellogg administration was a usurpation, and after a conflict with the metropolitan police, in the streets of the city, seized the state and city buildings and property on 14 September, and compelled Governor Kellogg to take refuge in the custom-house.
On 25 February, 1876, Governor Kellogg was impeached by the lower house of the legislature, the principal accusation being that he had used for other purposes money that had been set apart for the payment of interest; but the case was dismissed by the senate.
Kellogg was chosen to the United States senate by the former, and admitted to his seat by vote of the senate on 30 November, 1877.

In this case, William Cruikshank and a mob of some one hundred others were indicted under the Enforcement Act of 1870 with criminal conspiracy to violate the civil rights of two fl men, Levi Nelson and Alexander Tillman, including their right to peaceably assemble, and their right to keep and bear arms.
The result was that the Kellogg faction produced a board which declared Kellogg the governor without having seen the ballots, and for a time the state had two rival governments, complete with two different state legislatures.
Captain William Ward, formerly an officer in a Grant Parish negro militia company, and now a member of the Kellogg legislature, soon arrived with three other Kellogg men and summoned negro militia from Smithfield Quarters, a nearby all-fl settlement, and from the surrounding area to defend the courthouse and the Kellogg- installed parish government.

Leib also forwarded to Lincoln an assessment of the crucial Pennsylvania situation from Cameron operative John P. Sanderson, who was city solicitor of Philadelphia and very close to that state's shifting electoral circumstances.

George H. Williams is a man of large resources, never failing in audacity, but he was not prepared to ask the President to recognise a Negro rowdy as Governor of Louisiana, merely because that Negro rowdy, in the absence of executive and legislature, had squatted in the chair of State.
To Kellogg's last appeal for help, the President wired, impatiently: ‘It is exceedingly unpalatable to use troops in anticipation of danger; let the State authorities be right, and then proceed with their duties.’ Other critics, also of his own party, show as much impatience as the President.
William Vigers, clerk of the late Chamber and candidate for the next, is waiting in Kellogg's anteroom, with his official roll.
