UCI's first buildings--designed by William Pereira and Associates--included the Langson Library and Gateway Commons, the original Social Sciences buildings, and the original Humanities buildings.
Pereira employed a "brutalist" architecture, and the buildings stood boldly from the barren landscape surrounding the campus of the 1960s.
The effect of the new campus was such that in 1972 director J. Lee Thompson set his science fiction movie, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (a sequel to the 1968 original) among UCI's buildings.

William Pereira helped define emerging social values: he designed every building type imaginable, from houses to hospitals, as well as inventing some of his own, such as the Television Studios for CBS in Los Angeles, which were the first of their kind.
For the expansion of Los Angeles International Airport Pereira convinced authorities to adapt the facility to jet planes before jet travel was commonplace.
This monograph captures Pereira's talent and influence, featuring in-depth, behind-the-scenes views of his most well known projects, including the CBS, USC Masterplan, the University of California (Irvine) campus, the Doha Masterplan, the Transamerica Tower in San Francisco, and the LA Airport.

USC Trojan Family Magazine - Summer 1998: Mailbag
As director of planning and design for Pereira, I was privileged to meet with them and engage in a number of stimulating discussions related to then current and long-term planning for the university during the early 1960s.
Bill Pereira, then a visiting professor of architecture and a planning consultant for USC, was clearly frustrated by the serious limitations of a severely constricted site and difficult social, economic, and infrastructure problems which enveloped the campus and environs.
Toward this end, Dr. Topping directed William Pereira Associates to assist the city in identification, planning and redevelopment of adjoining areas which would allow USC to grow, prosper and enhance the greater university environs.

The Pyramid is not, however, the quintessential San Francisco highrise simply because it's tall and oddly shaped.
Its design, by Los Angeles architect William Pereira (who later designed the Citicorp Center on Sansome) is a natural and novel response to the local climate; its sloping walls allow more sunlight to reach the street.
Of course, its pyramid shape also breaks the first rule of highrise economics: Its increasingly valuable upper floors grow progressively smaller, so that by the 48th floor, its floorplate has shrunk to a mere 2,000 square feet — barely big enough for a CEO's office.
