It should come as no surprise to anyone that William Peter Blatty, the Oscar-winning writer of The Exorcist, is full of surprises.
In person, Blatty is a stale, crusty guy who rarely cracks a smile and lives up to the stereotypes that old men are set in their ways and that writers are socially inept.
Still, the author was deeply committed to promoting the recent re-release of his beloved film, and to the restoration of 12 minutes of restored footage despite objections from the film's director, William Friedkin.

William Peter Blatty's novel, "The Exorcist," was based on a number of newspaper articles published in 1949, telling of a 13-year-old Mount Rainier, Maryland boy who had been freed by a Catholic priest of possession by the devil through the ancient ritual of exorcism.
However, Blatty maintained that some five copies of the diary existed - including two within the archives of two separate archdioceses - and that he did eventually read a copy of it, although he did not reveal where he had obtained his copy.
Blatty made his directorial debut with "The Ninth Configuration," winning another Golden Globe® award for the screenplay adaptation of his novel "Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane." Blatty also wrote and directed "The Exorcist III," based on his novel "Legion," starring George C. Scott as Leutenant Kinderman.

William Peter Blatty's seminal novel of demonic possession took the nation and much of the world by storm when it was published in 1971, and the movie adaptation of The Exorcist ranks as one of the most famous horror movies of all time.
Despite all of its religious and demonic attributes, I believe Peter William Blatty's novel is a deep look inside the heart of man as he attempts to make sense and keep the faith in the face of the sometimes revolting human condition.
William Peter Blattey ingeniously uses a terrifying backdrop such as the demonic possession of an innocent young girl to convey the importance of keeping one's faith in God and the goodness for which God stands for.

Kinderman is merely a tool in which Blatty spews his worldly wisdom and philosophy, which, in of itself is a good belief, however, this is not the space for that kind of information.
Blatty clearly thinks Kinderman is a genius creation; you begin to suspect that Blatty created this character as a self-portrait, and lets him drone on purely out of narcissism.
