Phillips commuted regularly to New York state 1979-85 to conduct the Plattsburg Symphony Orchestra.

He and his his wife have two daughters; Caitlin Phillips (b 1979) who founded Rebound Designs, and Christine Phillips (b 1981) who is studying in the UK to be an archaeologist.

Phillips, a resident of Gaithersburg and a NIST Fellow since 1996, is internationally known for advancing basic knowledge and new techniques to chill atoms to extremely low temperatures.
Phillips and his team are continuing to study ultra-cold trapped atoms with spin-off applications for improved accuracy in atomic clocks and in fabrication of nanostructures.

William Beynon Phillips was born in Glamorganshire County, South Wales in 1841.
On July 30, 1864 at the Battle of the Crater, William was taken prisoner when he and others of the 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Heavy Artillery temporarily exploited the breach in the Confederate defenses only to be cut off and surrounded by a patchwork defense that foiled the assault.
Though no documentation has yet been found to substantiate this claim, it is possible that William was taken to Libby Prison where he was processed as a prisoner and then sent south with other captives from the battle to various POW camps.
