Ponsonby's third son, George Ponsonby (1755-1817), lord chancellor of Ireland, was born on the 5th of March 1755 and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge.
After 1800 Ponsonby represented Wicklow and then Tavistock in the united parliament; in 1806 he was lore chancellor of Ireland, and from 1808 to 1817 he was the official leader of the opposition in the House of Commons.
Sir William Ponsonby's posthumous son William (1816-1861) became 3rd Baron Ponsonby on the death of his uncle John, Viscount Ponsonby; he died childless and was succeeded by his cousin William Brabazon Ponsonby (1807-1866), only son of the bishop of Derry, on whose death the barony of Ponsonby became extinct.

Ponsonby arrived at Vittoria itself to witness the chaos that was supposed to be the retreat, as the army became confused with the cumbersome baggage train and thousands of camp followers.
Ponsonby's Brigade therefore found itself in possession of the King's complete baggage train, and what the retreating French troops and civilians had not taken was now seized by the British, Ponsonby himself came into possession of the King's sword, sabretache, and plate.
Ponsonby might have escaped if he had been better mounted, but the groom with his chestnut charger could not be found a the moment of the charge, and he was riding a small bay hack which soon stuck fast in the heavy ground.

The Defence of Poesie Henry Olney produced a printing of _An Apologie for Poetrie_ in the spring of 1595; this edition proved to be unauthorized, as William Ponsonby had entered the work in the Stationer's register on November 29, 1594.
An examination of the paper used in the two manuscript versions, which was done at the request of Mary Mohl, the discoverer of the Norfolk maunuscript, suggested that the latter, though in some respects inferior, is the older of the two (_The Apology for Poetry_ xxiv).
