Burnett kept busy, producing a novel or more a year and turning most into screenplay s (some as many as three times).
Thematically Burnett was similar to Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain but his contrasting of the corruption and corrosion of the city with the better life his characters yearned for, represented by the paradise of the pastoral, was fresh and original.
Burnett worked with many of the greats in acting and directing, including John Huston, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Nicholas Ray and Michael Cimino, Humphrey Bogart, Ida Lupino, Paul Muni, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood.

Henry L. Burnett was a direct descendant of William Burnett who was colonial governor of New York and New Jersey from 1720 to 1728 and afterward of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Another member of the family, William Burnett was a member of the Continental congress, serving from 1776 until the close of the war as surgeon-general of the army for the eastern district of the Union.
The responsibiliites of this office were such that he soon became a national figure and presided at some memorable cases, one being when he secured the conviction of the conspirators and exposed the connivance of high Confederate officials in the attempt to murder the chiefs of the federal government at the time Lincoln was assassinated.

A former government statistician, Burnett settled in Chicago at the height of Prohibition and penned his first novel "Little Caesar" in 1929.
A veiled study of the rise and fall of a mobster who bore a passing resemblance to Al Capone, the novel was an success as was the screen version starring Edward G Robinson.
Books and stories with Burnett's by-line were almost a guaranteed sale to Hollywood (not unlike John Grisham and Stephen King in the late 20th Century), and eventually the writer turned to penning his own scripts for Tinseltown.

In neighboring Bedford Co, within a year of the marriage of Richard Burnett and Nancy Saunders, Thomas Saunders married Sabre Burnett.
