William Redfern was both a pioneer in public health and represents the earliest beginnings of the first medical speciality to develop in Australia - that of preventive medicine.
In 1804, William Redfern was among the first medical practitioners to be involved in immunisation.
Whereas the Australia Redfern lived in was constrained by the need for some changes to be referred to the Government in faraway London, so, too, much of the constraints or successes of public health in Australia is determined by the level of cooperation that can be reached by Australia's nine Governments.

Redfern is at the heart of the indigenous nation.
By the time Dr William Redfern consolidated his land grant in 1816, the white settlers were more worried about escaped convicts than by Aborigines.
