William Cox Redfield (1858 - 1932) served as U.S. Secretary of Commerce from March 5, 1913 to October 31, 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson.
Redfield was the first commerce secretary in the United States, taking office immediately after the Department of Commerce and Labor was divided into two departments, the Department of Commerce and the Department of Labor.
Redfield also served as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1911 to 1913.

Manhattan-born thespian William Redfield was influenced early on into an acting career as the son of an orchestra conductor and a former Ziegfeld Follies girl.
During the filming of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), one-time fellow actor and real-life Psychiatrist Dean R. Brooks diagnosed William Redfield with leukemia (this was long before the days of bone marrow transplants), and gave him 18 months to live (he died 18 months later, pretty much to the day).
Redfield wrote a memoir of the 1964 stage production of Hamlet (1964/I) directed by John Gielgud and starring Richard Burton that was captured on film.

Redfield arrived at the conclusion that tile storm was a progressive whirlwind; but other enterprises prevented the development of his theory at that time.
He became interested in steam navigation, and as the general community had become alarmed by several disastrous steamboat explosions he devised and established a line of safety-barges, consisting of large and commodious passenger-boats towed by a steamboat at sufficient distance to prevent danger, to run between New York and Albany.

He never lived in Redfield, but the people who worked for the company were acquainted with him and from 1881 until he passed away, he visited “Redfield” regularly in his special coach.
After the elections, Redfield held secret meetings and plans were made to steal the records and were carried out on December 5, 1884.
After two years of Redfield and Aston stealing the records from each other, a general election was held in November of 1886 and Redfield legally received enough votes to become the county seat and in the spring of 1887 construction began on the new brick courthouse.

This is a marvelous account of how the production came together--or, perhaps, didn't (Redfield casts some doubt about Guilgud's directing ability)--and quite possibly is the best single book of an actor's perspective of theatre.
It isn't only about Hamlet: Redfield's "letters" also deal with acting overall.
It is fun to read of the sense of awe Broadway actors had when meeting a star: Elizabeth Taylor, then Burton's wife, is present during rehearsals, and Redfield is as star-struck as anyone can be.

Originally called July Pork Bellies (a reference to commodities futures that makes sense in the context of this story), For Pete's Sake doesn't really measure up to the aforementioned Streisand comedies, but there are certainly solid moments and individual performances to single out for praise.
(Among the latter is wonderful character work by Molly Picon, Estelle Parsons, and William Redfield.) Director Yates, as has often been the case, didn't quite get his head around this sort of broad material; as comedy goes, he has proven more adept with sweeter, droller films such as Breaking Away.
Molly Picon is also a ghoulish little delight, and Estelle Parsons and William Redfield turn in dependably professional performances.
