Sir William Rothenstein, (January 29, 1872 – February 14, 1945), was an English painter, draughtsman and writer on art.
Rothenstein was Principal of the Royal College of Art from 1920 to 1935, where he encouraged figures including Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore and Paul Nash.
William Rothenstein was the father of art historian and director of the Tate Gallery from 1938 to 1964, John Rothenstein, and the highly respected British printmaker Michael Rothenstein, whose divorce from Duffy Ayers caused a major controversy in British society.

William Rothenstein was the son of Moritz Rothenstein, who came to England from Hanover in 1859, and the brother of Charles Lambert Rutherston, the collector, and Albert Daniel Rutherston, the artist.

After Hardy’s death Rothenstein decided to undertake the project of recording the Westminster Abbey funeral service in the form of a group portrait of the pallbearers.
Rothenstein wrote that ‘Hardy, for whom country churches and churchyards had such a strong attraction, left directions that he was to lie beside his first wife in the churchyard at Stinsford.
Because of this, many of the pallbearers disapproved of Rothenstein’s portrait and so it was abandoned before its completion, however Rothenstein’s gesture was a final testament to the respect he felt for Hardy.

It was kind of a Who's Who meets People magazine type concept and Sargent was just one of a number of celebrities that William drew.
It's funny, at the 1890's website, they describe Sargent like this: "Rothenstein's Sargent appears almost to have been caught unawares and captured against his will by his fellow 'lion hunter' [fellow portrait artist], with a cigarette still dangling from his lips and an expression of wariness and defensiveness in his eyes."
